PUJ Obstruction

What Is PUJ Obstruction?

PUJ (Pelvi-Ureteric Junction) Obstruction is a condition in which the flow of urine from the kidney to the ureter is partially or completely blocked at the junction where the kidney meets the ureter. This blockage prevents urine from draining normally, causing it to accumulate within the kidney and leading to swelling, known as hydronephrosis.

PUJ obstruction may be present from birth (congenital) or develop later in life due to scarring, kidney stones, infection, or other underlying conditions. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to protect kidney function and prevent long-term complications.

Symptoms of PUJ Obstruction

The symptoms of PUJ obstruction can vary depending on the severity of the blockage and the patient's age. Some individuals may remain symptom-free for years, while others may experience significant discomfort and urinary problems.

As the blockage worsens, urine may accumulate within the kidney, increasing pressure and causing the kidney to swell. Patients may experience intermittent pain in the side or back, particularly after drinking large amounts of fluids. In some cases, recurrent urinary tract infections, nausea, vomiting, or blood in the urine may also occur, affecting overall comfort and quality of life.
