What Is Reflux (Urine Backflow)?

Reflux, also known as Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR), is a condition in which urine flows backward from the bladder into the ureters and, in some cases, back into the kidneys. Normally, urine travels in one direction—from the kidneys to the bladder. When this natural flow is disrupted, urine can reflux backward, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections and kidney damage.

Reflux is more commonly seen in children, although it can also occur in adults. Early diagnosis and proper management are essential to protect kidney function and prevent long-term complications.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters?

Reflux (Urine Backflow) can significantly impact kidney health if not detected and treated at an early stage. Timely diagnosis allows specialists to assess the severity of the condition and determine the most appropriate treatment approach before permanent kidney damage occurs.

Early intervention helps reduce the risk of recurrent infections, protects kidney function, and improves long-term urinary health. Depending on the severity of reflux, treatment may include observation, medication, lifestyle modifications, or corrective surgical procedures.
